I thought this article was pretty good...towards the end, they do get down on the cost of the items (as most articles tend to do) The best part is they confirm the Felicity movie to air on the WB this Fall!
American Girl dolls are an American success story

Yay! I love Colonial stuff - I wish I had gotten Felicity instead of Josefina years ago - and I can't wait to see the costumes and settings!!

I can't wait. I am trying desperately to save for Elizabeth and Felicity stuff. I do agree with the article that for a lot of families a $100 doll plus clothes and accessories is too expensive. And that is a shame. I consider Kaitlin to be lucky that not only will she have an American Girl doll but she will have several well outfitted AG dolls. I just disagree with parents who can afford the doll saying it is not worth the money.

That's wonderful! What a super article. I really enjoyed it.
We just can't wait for Felicity's movie, especially if it means she'll be back in the catalog. Felicity is my youngest dd's favorite doll and it is so hard for her to make a wish list without a catalog.

The dolls and clothes ARE expensive - I don't disagree with them on that. However, they last much longer (case in point, I have my dolls and their clothes from 1987) than your typical toy. There's no real age range, so unless your daughter reaches that "too cool for dolls" stage, you won't have to pack them up when a girl reaches a certain age - and some girls never outgrow dolls. The more expensive items - the tables and chairs, desks, trunks, beds - are not cheap plastic toys that will crack and break with excessive play like those from mass merchandisers. They are designed to hold up through a girls childhood and even til she is an adult if she chooses to keep them that long. How many people still have their pink plastic Barbie houses however? (BTW, I'm not knocking the less expensive doll items here, I buy them for my daughter, I'm just offering why I personally DO like the AG furniture)
I am guilty of getting my daughter little items when we go shopping - you know, $5 here, $10 there - and while she has fun playing with them at the mall and for a day or two later, they almost always end up in the toy box never to see the light of day. I stopped buying these and instead save the money and buy what I consider more quality - yes, more expensive - toys that get more play time, hold up better, and will be nice to pass along to her cousin or to resell later. I don't have a lot of money, but to me, it's worth it for her to have the "best." I would rather spend a little more on nieces and nephews presents and get them something I know will last instead of something that will break or be lost or out of style in a few weeks. I'm sorry if that makes me sound snobby; I'm really not trying to.
A girl's doll is a treasure that most will save for years, and when she is an adult can pull out and reflect on. To me, it's worth it to spend a little more on something that will be loved and cherished for many years.

Cleo: I agree with you completely!
Also, thanks for posting the article, it's great to hear that the Felicity movie is really going to happen, I was beginning to fear that it was just maybe our own wishful thinking that it would come this year.
Then Elizabeth really is coming too....gotta start saving those pennies for her...and wondering what else they will release or re-introduce?

Yes, thanks so much for sharing that. I really enjoyed it.
I do have a problem with parents who can't afford AG. I feel really bad for them. But I also know that there are others who scrimp and save to get one for their daughter. I also know there are some who could afford a doll, but won't spend the money. This is something that is out of everyone's control.
We were not well to do when we were buying AG dolls for our daughter. Just average...like now. So I tend to not completely understand that aspect of it. There will always be someone who cannont afford something, right?

Thanks for the article. It was very interesting. I can't wait until the movie comes out. I also can't wait to see the new Felicity and Elizabeth stuff that AG has come up with. Ahhh!!! I have no patience. I need to work on that
